It's all about jazz
One of the greatest jazz singers of all times, once said, “Jazz is played from the heart. You can even live by it. Always love it”.
Louis Armstrong’s sentiment still rings true today. Our own celebrations of the soulful music, kick off next month. Aberdeen Jazz Festival takes place throughout the city from 15-19 March. The four day festival has highlights from Curtis Stigers, The Excitements, Colin Steele and the highly anticipated outdoor, Jazz on the Green. Check out our what’s on calendar for full event listings.
If you’re looking for some inspiration of other things to do whilst you visit the festival we have put together some top tips:
City centre hidden gems to discover
Old Aberdeen - Aberdeen, Scotland's third largest city, grew out of two distinct communities. Monks and scholars, traders and travellers settled round Old Aberdeen in the area where 14th century St Machar’s Cathedral still stands and where Kings College, the forerunner to Aberdeen University, was founded by Bishop Elphinstone in 1495. Today, Old Aberdeen is a charming University town steeped in history.
Fittee – Footdee, pronounced ‘Fittie’ by Aberdonian’s, is a quaint 19th Century fishing village nestled at the end of Aberdeen Beach. Here, the mile long sandy beach is lined with restaurants, cafes and entertainment. The beach is used regularly by surfers and you might even catch a glimpse of the urban dolphins that play at the nearby working harbour mouth.
Famous attractions to tick off the list
Dunnottar Castle - Spectacular and evocative ruined cliff-top Castle - once seen, never forgotten. One of Scotland’s most iconic landmarks!
Marischal College – “One of the most architecturally distinctive cities in Europe” The Scotsman. Marischal College has to be our best known building – it’s the 2nd largest granite building in the world!
Glen Garioch - You couldn’t visit Aberdeen and not head out to one of our famous Aberdeenshire distillery. This is the closest one to the city centre – well worth a trip in between shows!
